Ellen DeGeneres is a Scab!
November 9, 2007 | Pop Culture
While David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien and my true love Craig Ferguson (sorry, George) all are supporting the striking members of the Writers Guild — Ellen DeGeneres has decided to cross the picket lines.
Ellen told her audience:
“I want to say I love my writers. I love them. In honor of them today, I’m not going to do a monologue. I support them and hope that they get everything they’re asking for. And I hope it works out soon. In the meantime, people have traveled across the country. They’ve made plans. They’re here. I want to do everything I can to make your trip enjoyable and give you a show.”
Translation: Actually, I’m not doing a monologue because no one’s written one for me.
The former nice girl of comedy isn’t winning any popularity contests lately after her on-air doggie meltdown and her picket-line crossing. In fact, one of Ellen’s former writers is now blogging about her two-facedness (let’s just pretend that’s a word), saying that she’d act all sweet in front of the cameras and once the director yelled cut, she’d hiss to the writers: “Why do you keep writing these unfunny jokes?”
Oh, man. You don’t want to mess with us writers. We’ll… write about you! That’s right — we’re armed with our thesauruses and mad as hell. Watch out! Next thing you know, your monologue will be filled with unruly semi-colons, Ellen…

Wow-she looks so much like my best friend
in that pic that I can’t bring myself
to say anything bad. How unusual.

I appreciate her concern about so many people travelling across the country to attend the show, but it might have been a wiser political decision to offer them an alternative way to spend their time, in respect to the strike. If all else fails, don’t tape the show… just hang out with the audience and talk and dance and do whatever, but refuse to make it a taped “show”. That would more than satisfy people who’ve travelled to see the show, and would probably sit fine in respect to the necessary politics. What do you guys think?

I agree Jenn F. I also doubt many people travel to LA JUST to see her show, so her people could have given a heads up to the guests beforehand and/or given them a consolation gift or something. But it’s not right to disrespect your staff like that. Jon Stewart and Letterman are even paying their staffs for two weeks in support of the strike. It’s really lame of Ellen to do this to her colleagues who write her funny jokes every day.

You should work for the UN.
I wouldn’t want to be Ellen when the strike is over.

She should do something else with the audience like educate them about the proper way to adopt an animal.

I just can’t respect someone who crosses a picket line. I could understand if it’s someone who is in a situation where it’s either work or don’t have $$$ for food, but Ellen is hardly in that category.
I’m not even really a fan of unions, but yeah…no good.

Sorry, Ellen, but you are a SCAB. I am a union member (PSEA/NEA) and sometime writer.
People have GOT to support the Writers Guild if
they believe in intellectual property rights.
Which, of course, I do.
(Forgive me, Candy, for being political.)

Who cares. None of the writer’s strike is newsworthy. Start protesting something real.

A strike…any strike matters. Whether you are pro union or not…the unions make it so that all workers, union or non union…get fair working wages. Without these unions, we’d all be working for spit, and no benefits, if the the major corporations and the U.S. government had their way.
The Powers That Be see us all as slaves…and as N-Words…no matter what your color, gender or religion is. If you are middle class or poor…and increasingly, even upper middle class…you mean nothing to the elite, other than to be used as dupes…and thrown away like so much desposable trash when they are done with you and your loved ones!!! Like it or not, we must all support the unions…because the corporations and the government refuse to support us, rather, they regularly choose to rob from us, in front of God…and everybody.
“The grabbing hands, grab all they can…all for themselves, after all, the grabbing hands…grab all they can, all for themselves…after all, it’s a competitive world…everything counts…in large amounts”

ROTFL!!
Candy, “Oh, man. You don’t want to mess with us writers. We’ll… write about you! That’s right — we’re armed with our thesauruses and mad as hell.”
That’s right. The pen is mightier than the sword. It’s Hemingway bitch!

It’s good to see so many people supporting the strikers.
There’s a misconception that people in this line of work are rolling in dough, when really they’re treated as labor.
This IS newsworthy if you’re a friend of labor!!

Hey Zip,
That was interesting. You even threw in some Martin Gore. Nice touch.

I say good for Ellen! I previously worked for the State and was forced in a union. I didn’t agree with MOST of the union’s “demands” and ways about getting things. At some point there was talk of a strike and there was no f*cking way that I was going join a strike. If I even miss one day of pay, I will be behind on my bills. I was proudly going to be a “scab”. Luckily, we never had to strike and I now happily work for a private company that doesn’t have a union.
Now, of course, it’s a different story with celebrities. They can pay their bills and THEN some if they miss work. BUT – I agree with Ellen, she’s not disappointing her audience. People DO travel to see her show. Of course, they can probably enjoy themselves doing other things, but the point to their trip may have been to see Ellen. I’d be angry if she cancelled her show.

Say, “Bobofot” let me know when you want a pay increase, I’m sure the “Union Writers” will back you up. That’s the problem with this country,…Ha-ray for ME, and shit on any one else. Unions are the reason any of us make good wages…even company employees. Wise up everyone!!
Ellen,….kiss my Union ass!
