I’m Sure Glad No One Takes *My* Picture at the Beach

The one-time 007, Pierce Brosnan, 54, and his 44-year-old wife Keely Shaye Smith hit the waves in Kauai, Hawaii on Wednesday. And while some may be shocked — just shocked! — to see a woman who is not a size 2 flaunting her curves in a two-piece, I say, good for her. Hell, I’m not exactly channeling Adriana Lima in my tankini.
Hey, shut up! I love tankinis.
So rather than rag on the mother of two for having a normal figure, I present two of my favorite comments on these pictures:
From JustJared: You guys are cruel. I have to atleast give her credit for wearing something like that. I am way thinner and scared to wear a two piece.
From ONTD: i’m not judging her. if she is happy (and she certainly looks it), great for her. i’m kind of miserable in my size 4 body now anyways.
Congratulations to both commenters for cleverly managing to compliment themselves while so benevolently defending Keely’s figure. That takes talent — and an impressive amount of narcissism!
Like, stop being so mean, guys! My slim, rock-hard size-zero body is consumed with sympathy for her.

She does look happy. That’s more than can be said for a lot of people, thinner or not. And she gets to sleep with Pierce Brosnan! Hey, maybe Pierce prefers bountiful women (it does happen, you know). Or maybe he just loves his wife, regardless of whether or not she has some extra weight on her bones.

Yeah Candy my first thought upon reading those two comments was funny how they worked in their own skinny selves for all to read. It is fairly recent that skinny woman have been viewed as the ideal beauty. Voluptuous – or bountiful – woman had long been heralded as beauties in most cultures. Hats off to Keely.

I don’t give a damned what people wear to the beach. But i’ll tell you this–all these women commenting on how “fat” she is, and how “gross” she looks, and how “she shouldnt be out in public like that,” would sure as hell plop down their beach chair next to her sooner than next to adriana lima–esp. if they were with their man! Confidence is what makes a person sexy. I’ve seen women much bigger than her work it and look hot.
Pierce must be relieved to not have to keep the “Bond” body going all the time now. That’s a hell of a lot of work, especially at his age. I say he’s well earned any bit of portliness he shows. And his wife? She’s reminding the rest of us that we don’t have to be a size 2 to be sexy. Brava!

OK guys, you will be mad at me, but here goes anyway…
we can tell ourselves all we want that she looks “fierce” and “sexy” and “confident,” but really, I work my ass off so that I don’t look like this…why? Because it makes me feel good to look good, but also because it’s really NOT what men want. Well, yeah, some men will want this. And I don’t really think they want stick figures either. But she is not going to be garnering a lot of catcalls from men…and though she may get “Respect” or “Admiration” from women, we all know that she just doesn’t look “hot.” OK let the onslaught begin….and no, I am not devoid of self esteem, but I AM honest with myself, and the attention I get feels good, because I look good and work to! I know she has had kids, and I do say more power to her and if she is happy then that’s great! But to say she looks hot is just a little crazy I think.

you raise good points joss. some counterpoints:
1. very few people look good in bikinis. i bet she does look very attractive in clothes.
2. “sexy” is in the eye of the beholder. confidence is the sexiest thing of all, imo. if you feel confident from working out, that’s what makes you sexy. for keely, it’s looking happy and boobalicious in a bikini.
3. ALL women, big and small, get a lot of catcalls from men. men are pigs!

The thing is-she’s larger but she’s SHAPELY, there are plenty of thin, gawky women (and men)who aren’t proportional, and they are not always hot.
thin doesn’t automatically equal hot.
I think she does look hot.

Also, remember that she’s not on the market. She’s not trying to impress anyone but her husband… and she’s already done that. Maybe he does like her that way. Maybe he’s not shallow enough to care about the extra weight.
Joss, you’re perfectly entitled to be whatever size you want to be. But there’s no need to futher enforce the beauty standard that many women can’t reach. I also work out a lot in order to stay at a weight where I feel best. But I don’t look at bigger women and say they’re not hot. I still say it’s all about confidence. And Vern’s right… thin doesn’t automatically equal hot.
The sooner women and men begin to respect and appreciate different body shapes and sizes, the sooner we leave the catty and impossible “everyone should be flawless” mentality in the past.

Yeah, being out of shape certainly affects your mind set. Working out does wonders for your state of being, combined with eating healthy. Confidence is a factor for sure–regardless of weight–I cocktailed in a strip joint where we all had to be petite and buxom and I still felt painfully ugly. Men are attracted to all kinds of different chicks because of the packaging and some regardless of it.
